The lungs are two essential organs located in the chest that are responsible for gas exchange in the body. Their primary function is to take in oxygen from the air and release carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism. Oxygen is absorbed into the bloodstream through the alveoli, tiny air sacs in the lungs, while carbon dioxide is expelled when we exhale. The lungs are protected by the ribcage and are connected to the trachea (windpipe) via the bronchial tubes. The process of breathing, or respiration, allows the body to maintain proper oxygen levels and remove carbon dioxide to support cellular functions.
